Zach Werenski will remain with the Columbus Blue Jackets after general manager Don Waddell confirmed the star defenseman chose to stay despite recent trade discussions. The announcement brings clarity following days of speculation surrounding the reigning Norris Trophy winner’s future.
Speaking Thursday, Waddell revealed how firmly Werenski delivered his decision. “The end result is this is what we wanted. We didn’t want to have Zach go anywhere,” Waddell said.
He added, “When it came time to make a decision, he made it very clear to me, very directly and very passionately, that he wanted to be a Blue Jacket.”
Waddell had acknowledged Wednesday that the organization explored trade possibilities after Werenski initially expressed uncertainty about signing beyond his current contract. A deal was presented to the defenseman, but after discussions with his family, he declined to leave Columbus.

“We found something that would work for the club and took it to him,” Waddell said in his previous statement. “After some time and discussions with his family, Zach informed us that he didn’t want to leave Columbus. He has invested a great deal in this organization and after coming close and falling short the past two seasons, his desire is to win here and get this team back into the playoffs.”

Werenski also addressed the speculation, insisting the situation became bigger than it deserved.
“Don and I have had very open and honest dialogue since the season ended. Ideally, this wouldn’t have become such a public thing, but that is the world we live in now, and everything got blown out of proportion in my opinion. I want to win, and I want to do that in Columbus,” he said in his statement.
He emphasized his connection to the franchise, saying, “I’ve thought about things and discussed everything with my wife and family, we want to be in Columbus. It has been my home for the past 10 years and I have always been proud to be a Blue Jacket.”
The veteran defenseman also praised the organization. “We have the best fans in the NHL. I love my teammates and coaches and I’m looking forward to doing everything I can to get us back in the playoffs.”
Keeping Werenski is as valuable as any offseason acquisition. Elite, minute-eating defensemen rarely become available, and replacing his impact would have been nearly impossible.

The episode also reflects open communication between management and its franchise cornerstone. Rather than forcing a move, both sides explored options before reaching the same conclusion.
Columbus now enters the season with its top player fully committed and its leadership aligned. That stability matters for a team trying to end consecutive playoff disappointments. Trade rumors may have dominated the headlines, but the final outcome favored the Blue Jackets.
