The Black River girls soccer team clinched the SAC Lakeshore Division championship with a 2-1 win over South Haven on Monday, May 11.

Jennaviecia Hessel got the scoring started with 30 minutes remaining in the second half on an assist from Leah Goudie.

Nora LaBurn scored the eventual game-winner just one minute later.

South Haven was able to score with 15 minutes remaining but the Black River defense held strong.

"I am so proud of this team, they play together and are very selfless. It does not matter who scores, it is great team soccer," said Black River coach Kyle Lawton.

Saugatuck was in the hunt for the title, but last week's 4-1 loss to Black River put the River Rats alone in first behind a hat trick from Hessel.

Saugatuck bounced back in its senior night on Monday with a 7-0 win over Bridgman.

All seven goals were scored by seniors, led by Neave Rewa who scored four.

Audrey Rodewald, Avery Smith and Ellery Panapento, who also earned an assist, all added goals of their own in route to the win. Rewa also had two assists, along with one a piece from freshman Claire Robb and Charlee Gustafson.
