News about Brendan Sorsby being granted an injunction to be eligible to play for the Texas Tech football team in 2026 is being met with backlash from across the sports landscape.
Retired Tarrant County judge Ken Curry ruled in Sorsby's favor Monday after Sorsby, who admitted to gambling on sports, including on Indiana football games while he was a member of the Hoosiers, to bypass the NCAA's previous ruling that stripped Sorsby of his college eligibility. Curry's ruling grants Sorsby eligibility after serving a two-game suspension (games at home against Abilene Christian and at Oregon State) and says the NCAA cannot ban the Cincinnati transfer from competing with the Red Raiders.
In addition to the wide-ranging opinions of folks around the sport of college football, Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports dropped a story Monday afternoon that says athletic directors across the Big 12, and SEC, are less than thrilled about the ruling.
Discussions have included whether or not teams want to play Texas Tech.
"We've had some serious conversation about it," Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor is quoted as saying in the story. "There is still a lot of be discussed. We aren't scheduled to play them this year, but it's something we have to look at from a college football perspective. This is greater than the Big 12."
Georgia athletic director Josh Brooks said, "I think there needs to be serious conversations about not playing Texas Tech in any sports."
Brooks' suggestion is not a new one for Texas Tech athletics, the softball team facing similar scrutiny from teams in the SEC over the Red Raiders' use of the transfer portal last year. Those powers managed to keep Texas Tech off the schedule (for the most part) and led to plenty of friction between the conference and the Big 12 school throughout the year.
Taylor, the K-State AD, is also quoted as saying, "It's (expletive)ing bull(expletive)."
