Bernie Kosar is set to receive a liver transplant on Monday, Nov. 17, with the former NFL and Miami football quarterback sharing the news in a video he posted to social media.

The 61-year-old Kosar had been dealing with liver-related issues for years before being diagnosed in 2023 with cirrhosis, which is advanced scarring of the liver caused by a variety of diseases and conditions. At the same time, he was also diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Over the past week alone, Kosar has undergone five procedures to stop internal bleeding he has been experiencing.

The Youngstown, Ohio native, who is being treated at UH Cleveland Medical Center, was originally scheduled to receive a liver transplant last weekend, but the procedure was delayed because the donor’s liver was infected.

“As you get ready for something monumental and transformative like this in your life, you can’t help but be a little reflective,” Kosar said in a video he posted on social media. “As I go down here today, I think about all the awesome, awesome support and fans out there and my amazing children and family.”

Kosar first revealed his cirrhosis and Parkinson’s diagnoses in an interview with Cleveland Magazine in 2024. In the piece, he noted he reached a breaking point of sorts in December 2023, when he attended a Cleveland Browns game against the New York Jets on "Thursday Night Football."

“My body gave out on me,’’ he said to the magazine. "I really felt like I wasn’t going to make it home from the Jets game. I sucked it up, though, and continued to avoid the doctors until the new year. Then I went into the hospital and got a massive blood transfusion. It was like: 'How are you alive? How are you moving? Because your hemoglobin levels are so low.'"

Kosar is one of the most consequential figures in the history of Miami football.

He played for the Hurricanes for two seasons, throwing for 5,971 yards and 40 touchdowns in that time. Playing under coach Howard Schnellenberger, he helped lead Miami to its first-ever national championship during the 1983 season. He finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting in 1984 after passing for 3,642 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Kosar went on to play 12 seasons in the NFL, nine of which came with the Browns, the team he grew up rooting for in northeast Ohio. He made the Pro Bowl in 1987 and won a Super Bowl ring while a backup quarterback with the Dallas Cowboys during the 1993 season.

The Browns honored Kosar before their game on Sunday, Nov. 16 against the Baltimore Ravens.
