SHREVEPORT, La (KTAL/KMSS) — The LHSAA girls soccer quarterfinals began on Monday, with four Shreveport-Bossier City area teams in action.
Girls
Division I
(No. 13) Northshore 1, (No. 5) Benton, 2
Northshore and Benton delivered a thrilling, hard fought match on Monday. The Lady Panthers got on the board early in the first half, and would lead at halftime 1-0.
The game changed in the second half as the Lady Tigers played with more aggression, creating lots of scoring opportunities.
With just a little over seven minutes remaining, Benton was awarded a free kick. Eden Whiteman took the kick and scored an amazing goal from distance, tying the game at 1-1.
The game went to overtime, and in the second half of extra time Benton’s Baleigh Ware got shoved from behind in the box, which resulted in a penalty kick.
Senior Karsyn Best stepped up to take it, and slotted home the PK smoothly to give the Lady Tigers a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.
For the first time in school history, the Benton girls soccer team advanced to the state semifinals.
No. 5 Benton will face the winner of Tuesday’s match between No. 1 Mt. Carmel and No. 8 Southside.
Division II
(No. 6) St. Thomas More, 3 (No. 3) Caddo Magnet, 1
Caddo Magnet fell short in the quarterfinals against St. Thomas More. The Mustangs led 1-0 at the half, but the Cougars scored three unanswered goals in a matter of moments to open the second half.
Sophomore Skylar Stutes scored the game winning goal off a free kick to make it 2-1. Her night wasn’t done there as she assisted on the Cougars third goal of the night, scored by Lyza Peterman.
Division IV
(No. 6) Isidore Newman, 1 (No. 3) Loyola, 0
(No. 9) Calvary, 1 (No. 1) St. Thomas Aquinas, 0
No. 9 Calvary will face the winner of Tuesday’s match between No. 5 Catholic N.I. and No. 4 Pope John Paul II.
