The Cincinnati Bengals returned to the practice fields on Aug. 9 for a two-hour practice in the thick of the summer heat.

It was one of, if not, the hottest days of training camp so far with temperatures reaching a high of 90 degrees.

This practice was supposed to be one of the most challenging days of camp because of the upcoming preseason schedule. Cincinnati will have one more practice before hosting the Detroit Lions for the first preseason game of the season at Paycor Stadium on Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. ET.

Bengals coach Zac Taylor said the starters will play some in the first preseason game but didn’t expand on how much. Taylor will speak to reporters in Cincinnati on Aug. 11 ahead of the preseason opener.

Here are the biggest takeaways from training camp practice No. 10.

Injured Bengals defensive linemen BJ Hill and Shemar Stewart progressing

Prior to the start of training camp, the Bengals placed veteran defensive tackle BJ Hill on the physically unable to perform list (PUP) due to an injury.

Hill can’t practice until he’s cleared to return by the Bengals’ medical staff, but he appears to be trending in a positive direction. At the start of practice, Hill was wearing a helmet and shoulder pads while working on the sleds with Bengals’ director of rehabilitation Nick Cosgray.

The team hasn’t provided a timeline for Hill’s return, but this is seemingly a positive step in his progression to being cleared. Hill stood with the Bengals’ defensive linemen during practice.

Shemar Stewart was also moving on the field more comfortably wearing a compression sleeve on his left leg without a noticeable limp. Stewart hyperextended his knee during Cincinnati’s first practice on Aug. 29.

Stewart and Hill’s progression will continue to be monitored, and they won’t be rushed back as the team still has over a month before a regular season game is played. But there’s no question that the sooner Hill and Stewart return to the field, the better.

Bengals secondary lineup gets shake-up with Cook, Hill and Davis out

To ensure players are as fresh as possible, Taylor has mapped out a plan to give certain players scheduled days off. Defensive linemen Dexter Lawrence and Jonathan Allen and wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase have all been held out of different practices for veteran rest days.

Safety Bryan Cook appeared to be the newest player in this rotation. This marked the first time Cook has not practiced since training camp started. With Cook out, safety Kyle Duggar got the starting reps.

Cornerback Dax Hill continues to be monitored as he continues to work through what appears to be a hamstring issue. He hasn’t participated in practice recently, and the Bengals are being cautious with him. Slot cornerback Jalen Davis was dressed in uniform for practice but didn’t participate.

With Hill and Davis out, Bralyn Lux got the starting reps at slot cornerback and DJ Ivery continues to fill in for Hill at outside cornerback opposite of DJ Turner.

Bengals rookie wide receiver Colbie Young impresses again

The two rookies who’ve garnered the most attention through two weeks of training camp are wide receiver Colbie Young and defensive end Cashius Howell.

Young, the Bengals’ fourth-round pick, is turning heads at least once a practice. He continued to show what he could do for Cincinnati’s passing attack when he leaped over cornerback Jalen Kimber and came down with the ball for a completion during 11-on-11 with the second-team offense.

Here are two plays from Colbie Young with the 2s during camp today.

With Young expected to get plenty of playing time during the upcoming three preseason games, he could make a real push for playing time this season. Heading into the season Andrei Iosivas holds the Bengals’ No. 3 receiver spot, but if Young continues to impress, he could leapfrog Iosivas.
