Apr. 14—SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Beavers couldn't find a way to snatch a victory in their two doubleheaders over the weekend.
The Bemidji State softball team (16-28) traveled to Wayne State (25-18) on Saturday, suffering a pair of losses by scores of 7-6 and 7-3. BSU didn't fare any better in its road trip to No. 14 Augustana (37-9) on the ensuing day. The Vikings came away with a two-game sweep, notching a 8-2 win in game one and a 4-2 victory in game two.
The Beavers' first game against the Wildcats had to be settled in extra innings. Trailing 5-2 heading to the top of the seventh, Bemidji State racked up four runs to capture a 6-5 lead.
However, in the bottom of the seventh, WSC's Maddie Scobee blasted a home run to right center field to knot things up, 6-6. Wayne State wound up with the extra-inning win in the eighth.
The Wildcats were in firm control for most of game two, building up a 7-0 lead through the first four innings. Bemidji State's Jackie Larsen chipped away at the lead with a two-run homer in the fifth and Molly Houts tacked on another run with an RBI single in the seventh, but it wasn't enough to overcome Wayne State's healthy lead.
Augustana, who is currently sitting atop the NSIC standings, cruised to a comfortable win over BSU to open the doubleheader thanks to strong pitching and some timely hits. AU starting pitcher Grace Glanzer tossed six innings, allowing four hits and one walk while collecting nine strikeouts.
Bemidji State kept things much closer in game two. The Vikings grabbed a 3-1 lead after two innings, forcing the Beavers to make a change in the circle. Danica Sarff had a strong showing as BSU's relief pitcher, allowing just one hit and one run through 4.2 innings.
However, Bemidji State couldn't find enough runs to complete a comeback. Alexa Christenson reached home on a fielder's choice to third base in the fourth to collect a second run for the Beavers, but they were held scoreless in the final three innings.
