The calendar has turned to July, which means the Chicago Bears officially head back to Halas Hall for the start of training camp this month for the lead-up to the 2026 NFL season. It's a chance to get a good look at the roster before the season starts and to evaluate certain positions.
One position that appears to be set is running back thanks to the dynamic duo of D'Andre Swfit and Kyle Monangai. The two backs combined for 1,870 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns in 2025, and their skill sets complement one another. However, we may not be able to rule out general manager Ryan Poles making a significant upgrade at the position later in the year.
ESPN NFL analyst Benjamin Solak released his 10 predictions for the upcoming season, and he has the Bears making a huge trade with the Indianapolis Colts to land three-time Pro Bowl running back Jonathan Taylor. Solak states that with Taylor in the final year of his deal, the Colts teetering on a rebuild, and money tied into Daniel Jones and Alec Pierce, Indianapolis may be willing to part with their long-time workhorse back. "If the Colts come out of the gates slow and consider an organizational change midseason, then Taylor surely would draw trade interest," Solak writes. "His start to 2025 proved he still has 'best RB in the league' potential left in his legs, especially if his total touches are more carefully managed. A playoff-aspiring team that has viable change-of-pace backs but no dominant starter would love to grab Taylor for a one-year rental. Should he perform well, that team could give him that two-year, pay-as-we-go extension that running backs often get with their third contract."
While Solak likes what Swift and Monangai bring to the table, he's not convinced they can be enough to put the Bears offense over the top. "D'Andre Swift had a strong 2025 season, but he has not been reliable and has dealt with injuries for much of his career," Solak writes. "Kyle Monangai is a likable thumper but not for more than 10 or so carries per game. If the Bears' offense coalesces into a top-five unit—certainly possible given how they finished the 2025 season—the team might be fishing at the deadline for a field-tipping running back to give it an additional edge."
If a Taylor trade were to materialize, the haul the Carolina Panthers received from the San Francisco 49ers for Christian McCaffrey is a good blueprint for the compensation. The Panthers received a second, third, and fourth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and a 2024 fourth-round pick for the talented back.
Poles has made moves during every trade deadline since he became the Bears' general manager. From small moves like trading away running back Khalil Herbert in 2024, to major acquisitions like landing defensive end Montez Sweat in 2023, the Bears are always busy in the fall. We'll see if something like this materializes depending on how the team starts the year. At the very least, it sounds like Taylor will be available barring a surprise.
