The Chicago Bears signed Ian Wheeler as an undrafted free agent after not being taken in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Howard.
On Friday, Wheeler found a new home with an NFL team.
Wheeler's stint with the Bears wasn't for very long. He became very popular after appearing on "Hard Knocks." The Bears were featured that year along with the New York Giants and the AFC North.
Unfortunately, his rookie season didn't have a happy ending. In reality, it was over before it even had a chance to get started.
Wheeler suffered a torn ACL in the preseason finale against the Kansas City Chiefs that season, sidelining him for the whole year.
Nearly a year after he tore his ACL, the Bears parted ways with Wheeler and released him. The running back room was very crowded last season, with Wheeler competing against D'Andre Swift, Kyle Monangai, Roschon Johnson, Deion Hankins and Travis Homer.
He then joined the New Orleans Saints practice squad in November of 2025 before heading to the UFL. He didn't stay with the Saints long and was released a couple of weeks later.
Wheeler joined the Louisville Kings of the UFL, where he finally found his footing. He rushed for 371 yards and six touchdowns in the regular season and had 170 yards and two touchdowns in the playoffs.
The Kings went all the way to the United Bowl, the UFL's Super Bowl equivalent, and won. Wheeler was named the United Bowl MVP after rushing for 81 yards and a touchdown.
After a solid season in the UFL, Wheeler has signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Wheeler now joins his former teammate, D.J. Moore, at the Bills, who was traded there for a second-round pick this offseason.
Wheeler will try to make the roster in a running back room that features James Cook, Ty Johnson, Ray Davis and Frank Gore Jr.
The Bears have recently signed two players with UFL ties. Former Cleveland Browns and Houston Gamblers receiver Kaden Davis signed with the team after one year in the UFL.
Chicago also signed former Browns and Los Angeles Rams linebacker Tony Fields II. Fields came to the Windy City after one season in the UFL with the Columbus Aviators.
Unfortunately, there wasn't a place for Wheeler in Chicago. Hopefully, he'll get another shot in the NFL and land with the Bills.
