For all the success he had as head coach of the Chicago Bears in his first season last year, Ben Johnson knows it will not be an easy climb to keep that consistency going.

Known for his high-powered offense, Johnson was instrumental in turning around the development of quarterback Caleb Williams, which in turn led the Bears to an 11-win season, their first NFC North title since 2018, and their first playoff win since the 2010 season.

While Johnson's success in his first season rejuvenated the Bears franchise and city of Chicago, it also put a target on him as opponents will be looking to figure out, and slow down, Johnson's offense and ability as a playcaller. This week, Johnson discussed how he plans to keep his offense ahead of opposing defenses.

"I feel like we're so multiple in what we do and what we've put on tape," Johnson said. "It's really not a huge concern of mine, of teams feeling like they’ve got a beat on it. I think when you’ve got a quarterback like we have too, there's a lot of unpredictability that comes along with it. As he continues to grow and develop, if the structure of the play is there for him, then he'll take it. But what he can do out of structure is really unique and I think it makes us even more difficult to defend. Our guys do a great job, our coaching staff with the self-scout, knowing what we've put on tape and how can we can continue to compliment that going forward. So it’s not something that we spend a whole lot of time on."

Johnson has turned around the Bears franchise in just one season, but in order to keep himself and his team as a contender in the NFC, he'll have to keep his offense one step ahead of opposing defenses. One of the biggest credits Johnson received was building a strong coaching staff around him, and if they can turn it up a notch in their second year together, the Bears could find themselves in a favorable position to make noise this season.
