Former Bearden star Lane Thomas was traded from the Kansas City Royals to the Atlanta Braves on Aug. 1, two days before the MLB trade deadline.
Thomas is hitting .232 with 10 home runs and 37 RBIs through 97 games this season. He has a career batting average of .240 with 86 homers and 291 RBIs in eight MLB seasons.
The Braves acquired Thomas and left-handed pitcher Bailey Falter for pitching prospects Lucas Braun and Carter Holton.
Thomas was informed he had been traded during the Royals’ game against the Colorado Rockies on Aug. 1, being pulled from the outfield in the middle of the fourth inning. Chad Bishop of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Thomas flew back to Knoxville on Aug. 2 before driving to Atlanta to play for the team he grew up rooting for.
As a senior at Bearden in 2014, Thomas hit .410 with 17 home runs and 40 RBIs. He had been committed to Tennessee since his sophomore year but elected to skip college and sign with the Toronto Blue Jays after being selected in the fifth round of the 2014 MLB Draft.
Thomas has now been traded four times in his career. He was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 2017 and made his MLB debut with the Cardinals in 2019, and then in 2021 he was dealt to the Washington Nationals.
Just before the 2024 trade deadline, Washington sent Thomas to Cleveland. It was there that he had the highlight of his career thus far: a grand slam off Tigers star Tarik Skubal in Game 5 of the American League Division Series that powered the Guardians to a series-clinching win.
After one more season in Cleveland, Thomas signed a one-year deal with the Royals ahead of the 2026 season. He is in line to become a free agent for 2027.
