Bayern Munich start pre-season with depleted squad

Champions Bayern Munich were the last Bundesliga club to start the pre-season on Monday but it will still be a few weeks until coach Vincent Kompany will have all players available.

England captain Harry Kane and France players Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano only finished their World Cup efforts on Saturday and will get time off before returning to Munich.

Preparations started with diagnostics in a local hospital and a training camp is scheduled for next week in Bavaria for which the World Cup players from Germany and other teams are expected back.

Players present on Monday included midfielder Tom Bischof and reserve keeper Sven Ulreich. Lennart Karl and Serge Gnabry continued their comeback from injuries - that cost them playing at the World Cup - with individual sessions.

Bayern won the domestic double last season and start the season on August 22 with the German Super Cup match against Bundesliga runner-up Borussia Dortmund. Their first Bundesliga match is six days later against VfB Stuttgart.
