Spring Garden High's Ace Austin has been named Miss Basketball by the Alabama Sports Writers Association for the second straight year.

Austin, an Alabama signee, averaged 26.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 4.2 steals a game while leading the Panthers to a Class 1A state championship for the third straight year.

The award has been presented by the ASWA since 1988, and Austin is the first girl to win it twice. The ASWA announced Mr. and Miss Basketball, the super all-state teams and the players of the year for each classification at a lunch banquet in Montgomery on Thursday.

A 5-foot-8 point guard, Austin also was named the Class 1A girls basketball player of the year for the third straight season. She was a six-time all-state selection, including second team as a seventh-grader and first team the other five years.

Mr. Basketball was Hoover's DeWayne Brown, who led his team to the Class 7A state championship.

Spring Garden boys standout John Welsh was one of three finalists for the 1A boys player of the year, while Oxford's Jayden Alexander was a finalist for the 6A boys player of the year.
