Anthony Calantoni brings a steadying presence and leadership to the Edison playing fields. In the fall, it was as a quarterback for the Eagles. In the spring, it’s as a shortstop, willing his team in multiple ways.
He’s coming off a big week for a hot Edison squad, which reached the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament semifinals as the No. 11 seed.

Fans appreciated his efforts by voting the senior the MyCentralJersey.com Readers’ Choice Baseball Player of the Week in an online poll.
He went 5-for-7 last week with two runs and two steals as Edison went 2-0 before the GMCT. Then, the Eagles upset No. 6 Old Bridge 2-1 in Monday’s first round and third-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas 9-1 in Thursday’s quarters to reach the semifinals on Saturday.
Calantoni continued hitting by going 3-for-8 with an RBI and two runs scored along with two walks in the two games.
“Cal is definitely our sparkplug and senior leader,” Edison coach Vinnie Abene said. “He didn’t start the season off offensively as he would have liked, but he has never let that affect the other ways he can help us win a game. He is a plus base runner and has a plus glove at shortstop.
:He’s starting to swing it now so that just makes us that more of a dangerous team in the tournaments. Tough to replace four-year starters but I’m going to enjoy watching him finish off his career here in style.”
