Felix Munoz is a good receiver and blocks well.
No, Chris Kenney isn’t talking about the senior’s football prowess. Rather, the East Brunswick baseball coach is describing Munoz’s skills behind the plate as the Bears catcher.
Munoz was an outfielder but when the team needed a catcher last season, he stepped up.

“He’s a great leader,” Kenney said. “He’s one of the guys who leads by example. He’s a tough football guy. … We were in kind of desperate need. He went back there and did real well, but he’s a tough guy. Works hard every single day and I think the kids kind of feed off him, especially his work ethic.”
Munoz is having a breakout season for the hot Bears. Fans appreciated his efforts by voting him the MyCentralJersey.com Readers’ Choice Baseball Player of the Week. Munoz hit .778 last week (7-for-9) with seven RBIs and scored twice. He boosted his on-base percentage with two walks and was hit by a pitch.
Streaking East Brunswick (9-5) has won six of their last seven games, including key GMC Red Division two-game sweeps over Edison and St. Joseph fueled by an explosive offense.
“I think it took them a year to kind of get adjusted to the pitching and right now, I mean, they’re all clicking,” Kenney said. “The confidence level with them is great. Our lineup is probably about seven people deep right now who’s swinging really well.”
The 6-foot-2, 170-pound Munoz has been a big part of it with several timely hits. He’s not your typical pudgy catcher, either. He rarely gets pulled for a courtesy runner like most catchers and showcases his wide receiver-speed on the base paths.
He was pretty good on the gridiron, too. Coaches voted him First-Team All-National Gold Division last fall. He’ll be continuing his football career at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
While Munoz’s offense on the diamond has been a bonus, emerging as a top catcher and working with the pitchers calling the throws and reading the hitters has helped the Bears immensely.
“He kind of stepped up and took the reins, I guess you can say,” Kenney said. “It kind of fits his personality. He’s willing to block anything. He does a great job. He’s not scared of the ball. If you’re in that position you got to be willing to get hit by it. That football mentality – he’s a tough kid.”
