Oologah opened the 2026 baseball season exactly the way every team hopes to — with a district sweep.
Behind strong pitching performances and timely hitting from throughout the lineup, the Mustangs [2-0] edged Wagoner 4-2 Monday before grinding out a 2-1 victory Tuesday to complete the District 4A-7 sweep.
GAME 1: OOLOGAH 4, WAGONER 2
Sometimes the difference in a tight baseball game comes from the most unexpected places, and Monday night, it came from the bottom of Oologah’s lineup.
Jaxon Holland, Jack Major and Dax Hill combined for 5 of the Mustangs’ 9 hits as Oologah opened district play with a 4-2 victory over the Bulldogs.
Holland led the charge from the No. 7 spot in the order, going a perfect 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs.
On the mound, Jett Griswold delivered a dominant complete-game performance. The left-hander allowed just 2 hits and 2 runs — both unearned — over 7 innings while striking out 8 and walking 1.
Wagoner starter Kolby Gardenhire matched him for much of the night, pitching 7 innings while allowing 4 runs — all unearned — on 9 hits with 6 strikeouts.
The Mustangs took advantage of an early opportunity in the bottom of the first inning.
After putting pressure on the Bulldog defense, Oologah scored the game’s first run on an error to take a 1-0 lead.
From there, the Mustangs' lineup continued to apply steady pressure with 9 hits spread throughout the order.
The Bulldogs managed just 2 hits in the game, with Aven Goodlin and Hunter Johnson recording 1 apiece, but Griswold kept them largely off balance all evening to secure the season-opening win.
GAME 2: OOLOGAH 2, WAGONER 1
If Monday’s game was sparked by the bottom of the lineup, Tuesday’s rematch came down to a single swing.
Or rather, a single swing that produced a single.
Holland again played the hero, driving in the game’s first run with a fourth-inning single as Oologah held on for a 2-1 victory to complete the district sweep.
Pitching dominated the second game of the series.
Landon Roach started for the Mustangs and recorded 17 outs, allowing 2 hits and 1 run over 5 2/3 innings while walking 7 and striking out 2.
Wagoner tied the game in the top of the fifth when Eli Hopping drew a walk that allowed the Bulldogs to plate their lone run.
The Mustangs eventually regained the lead, and Brock Lustig closed the door in relief. The right-hander earned the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just 1 hit while striking out 1.
Wagoner starter Goodlin was strong as well, striking out 9 over 6 innings while allowing 2 runs — 1 earned — on 4 hits.
Holland finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Griswold, Uriah Hooks and Hill each added a hit for Oologah.
The Bulldogs scattered 3 hits from Judd Edwards, Hunter Johnson and Jake Pusatere and showed patience at the plate with 7 walks. Evan Luna and Goodlin each drew 2 free passes.
Despite the traffic on the bases, the Mustangs' pitching staff repeatedly worked out of trouble to secure the narrow win.
Oologah will look to carry its momentum into its next game at 5 p.m. Thursday when the Mustangs travel to Bristow.
