After a promising opening weekend at Globe Life Field, where No. 7 TCU scored wins over two ranked SEC foes (Vanderbilt and Arkansas), the Horned Frogs fell flat in their first midweek matchup of the season. Trailing 9-0 after one inning, TCU nearly rallied back, but lost to unranked UT-Arlington 11-8 on Tuesday evening. The Horned Frogs (2-2) will head west for a three-game series against the No. 1 ranked team in the country, UCLA.

North Dakota State transfer Nolan Johnson made his TCU debut and was roughed up in the first inning, allowing seven runs (three earned) on four hits while recording just one out. Tyler Phenow entered in relief and recorded two more outs, but not before allowing two more runs on three hits. In long relief, Cade Nelson excelled and gave the Horned Frogs their best pitching effort of the day, striking out five over four frames without allowing a run.
Walter Quinn logged the final seven outs for the Horned Frogs, striking out three and allowing just one hit. A wild pitch, combined with a fielder’s choice grounder and a sacrifice fly, enabled TCU to score three runs in the third inning. Another three-run effort in the fourth inning, where Kyuss Gargett belted a solo homer and Chase Brunson delivered a two-run double, made the score 9-6. Rob Liddington added a solo shot in the fifth inning.

Clinging to a 9-7 lead, UTA tacked on two unearned runs in the sixth inning off reliever Kade Durnin, who had two strikeouts and two walks. Nolan Traeger slapped an RBI single in the ninth inning, but it wasn’t enough for the Horned Frogs to complete their rally. TCU finished with 11 hits and three fielding errors in the loss.
