With one thunderous swing to the center field gap, Tyson Grimett turned a tight battle into a commanding lead.
Grimett’s three-run double ignited a six-run fifth inning Thursday, powering Claremore to an 8-5 win over Sallisaw in the Tiger/Zebra Classic at Legendary Legion Field at Murray-Pixley Park. The victory improved the Zebras’ season record to 13-3.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the third on an RBI single from the Black Diamonds' Luke Pack, Claremore surged ahead in the bottom of the fourth when Tyler Osgood delivered a two-run single, plating Brad Hoisington and Grimett for a 2-1 lead.
Sallisaw briefly reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth after Connor Green singled home a run and a passed ball brought in another to make it 3-2.
But the bottom half of the frame belonged to the Zebras.
Grimett cleared the bases with his double to score Kellen Gaede, Marcos Sallee and Jax Van Valkenburg. He later scored on an error before Osgood struck again, driving in two more runs with a single that extended the lead to 8-3.
The Black Diamonds' Dagan Grizzle made things interesting in the seventh with a two-run double, but it was too little, too late.
Ryder Garrison earned the win in relief, throwing three innings and allowing just two hits and two runs. Curtis Waters started for Claremore, giving up one run across four innings while striking out four.
Offensively, Osgood and Dan Harrington led the Zebras with two hits apiece, and Grimett and Osgood each tallied three RBIs.
Claremore turned one double play defensively and capitalized on Sallisaw’s mistakes in the field, proving once again that timely hitting and pressure on the basepaths can turn the tide.
