Brayden Floyd turned a comfortable lead into a runaway with one swing Monday evening.
The junior slugger’s 2-run home run in the third inning sparked an 8-run avalanche that powered Claremore to a 15-1 season- and district-opening victory over Edison on the road.
Floyd finished with 4 RBIs despite recording just 1 official hit, while Evan Jameson matched him with 4 RBIs of his own as the Zebras piled up 15 runs on 6 hits and 8 walks.
Claremore’s bottom-of-the-order production proved especially potent.
Saxton Pickup, Jameson and Tyler Osgood combined for 4 of the team’s 6 hits, scored 3 runs and drove in 6. Osgood collected 2 hits and 2 RBIs, while Jameson added a triple and a run-scoring single.
On the mound, Kellen Gaede set the tone early.
The left-hander allowed no hits and just 1 unearned run over 3 2/3 innings, striking out 8 while navigating 5 walks. Lucas Dupont slammed the door in relief, tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings with 3 strikeouts and no walks.
The Zebras [1-0, 1-0 District 5A-3] wasted no time seizing control.
In the top of the first, John Tedesco worked a walk and advanced to second after Floyd drew another free pass. Gaede was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Luke Roberts was also plunked, forcing in Tedesco for a 1-0 lead.
Osgood then laced a double to right field, driving in Floyd and courtesy runner Bo Wolf to push the margin to 3-0.
Gaede followed with a dominant bottom half, striking out 2 and inducing a popout to strand the Eagles.
After Gaede worked around a second-inning error and struck out the side in the second, Claremore’s offense erupted in the third.
Jax Van Valkenburg was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a throwing error. Two batters later, Floyd crushed a 2-run homer to left, extending the lead to 5-0.
The rally continued as Roberts walked, Osgood singled and Pickup walked to load the bases before Jameson ripped a bases-clearing triple to center field, making it 8-0.
Tedesco added a sacrifice fly to plate Jameson for a 9-0 advantage. Later in the inning, Floyd reached on a dropped third strike with the bases loaded, allowing another 2 runs to score and stretching the lead to 11-0.
By the time Edison [0-1] retired the side, the Zebras had sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning.
The Eagles’ lone run came in the fourth.
After a walk and 2 stolen bases, a passed ball allowed Carson Brennan to score, trimming the deficit to 11-1.
However, Claremore responded immediately in the fifth.
Tedesco was hit by a pitch before Van Valkenburg doubled to center, scoring Tedesco to make it 12-1. After another hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, Jaden Franco was plunked to force in a run for 13-1.
Osgood grounded into a double play that still plated Floyd, extending the lead to 14-1. Moments later, Jameson lined a single to left, scoring Gavin Bittle for the final tally of 15-1.
Dupont then retired Edison in order in the bottom of the fifth, striking out 2 to secure the run-rule victory.
The Zebras open the season 1-0 in District 5A-3 play and returns home to host the Eagles at 5 p.m. Tuesday on Legendary Legion Field at Murray-Pixley Park.
