Barcelona miss out on defensive transfer target

La Liga champions Barcelona have this weekend seen a member of the club’s transfer shortlist slip through their grasp. This comes amid the understanding that Lucas Herrington is all set to take his talents to the Premier League, with Hull City.

Herrington, for those not familiar with his name, is an 18-year-old central defender, who is currently plying his club trade with Major League Soccer side the Colorado Rapids.

Since swapping his home country for the USA earlier this year, the stopper has seen his reputation continue to grow, with Herrington having been widely hailed for his exploits on and off the ball alike.

Such talents gave rise to a call-up to Australia’s squad for this summer’s World Cup, with the Brisbane native having gone on to notch a pair of starts in North America.

Eager to get out ahead of the competition, the aforementioned Barcelona, in turn, recently tabled an offer for Herrington’s signature.

The proposal in question was rejected, however, with the teenage stopper now instead preparing for life in the Premier League.

And Blaugrana insider Sergi Capdevila has since provided an insight into the developments which ultimately led to the Spanish champions missing out:

‘Barça tried to get ahead with Lucas Herrington, but Colorado Rapids didn’t accept an initial offer below 10 million. They even went to see him in person in the USA. Ben Jacobs reports that Hull will pay more than 23 million for him. Barcelona didn’t want to get into auctions or pay a premium.’
