Arizona Cardinals running back James Conner and his reserve Trey Benson are both nursing injuries as the team continues its decline heading into Week 11. Conner was carted off early in the season with a foot injury and his absence has left a void that reserve running back Bam Knight was hoping he could fill.
The Cardinals revoked the backup duties from running back Emari Demercado after his blasphemous fumble against the Tennessee Titans in week 5. Demercado did lead the team with 64 rushing yards Sunday but he only had four rushing attempts. It’s hard not to suggest that Demercado’s infraction caused a negative vibration in the running back room, but the Cardinals are now 1-6 over the last seven games, and they dearly miss having their star running back in Conner in the lineup. Although Conner isn’t known for being a walking highlight reel, he did rush for 1,094 yards in 2024, a key facet in helping the team finish No. 7 in the NFL in total rushing yards that year. The Cardinals currently rank No. 18 in the NFL in rush yards per game, and Knight has averaged a measly 3.3 yards per carry.
Cardinals fans can pretty much kiss the 2025 season goodbye, but they should hang their heads high knowing that Benson, Conner, and potentially quarterback Kyler Murray will return in the future for the franchise. As for offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, he has tried to pick up the pieces, but Conner has an innate talent that simply can’t be taught. Hopefully Knight will at least continue to be competitive as he’s yet to record a game with more than 60 rushing yards this season.
