Weaverville has caught the pickleball bug.
The former Balcrank facility in Weaverville will become the new home of Ballcrank Arcade & Fairgrounds and Arcade, a 12-court pickleball facility set to open later this summer, the founders of Ballcrank Pickleball Club announced June 15.
Pickleball, a sport that blends tennis, badminton and table tennis, has grown rapidly in recent years, with the city of Asheville seeking to increase the number of publicly accessibly courts after players and Asheville Pickleball Association pushed for more public accessibility as players often compete with tennis players for access.
Spanning more than 30,000 square feet of the former Balcrank Corporation industrial headquarters, the 12-court facility will be open on a pay-as-you-play basis and will offer monthly memberships. Six courts will have video-capture technology, and two courts will be pro-sized. The club will also include a bar and lounge, a patio, showers and a pro shop with paddle demos. Ruben Kellam has been named its general manager. All skill levels will be welcome.
The plan is "to create a mix of recreational, cultural and hospitality businesses that will bring people with a broad range of interests to the space and to nearby Downtown Weaverville," according to the June 15 news release from the company. Balcrank Corporation, which manufactures automotive lubricant, operated on the property from 1982 to 2015 before relocating to 90 Monticello Road.
Keith Davis, Randy Talley, Jim Curley and Teri Lyng are Ballcrank's cofounders. Curley is the chairman and founder of the 2025 Stars Serving' Up Love charity tennis event and is the former tournament director of the U.S. Open Tennis Championships.
“Our pickleball community has been long underserved in terms of high-quality, dedicated courts that are available to players at all skill levels,” Davis, who is the club's CEO, said in a June 15 news release. “We are honored to help fill that void with a facility that is designed to embody the friendly and welcoming attitude of the game itself.”
