Future opponent of PSG on August 16 in the Trophee des Champions (French Super Cup), Lens will not have Pierre Sage on its bench for its reunion with the two-time European champion.

Runner-up to PSG in Ligue 1 during the 2025-26 season, Lens won the first Coupe de France in its history on May 22 by beating Nice 3-1 in the final, which will allow it to challenge the Parisian giant on Sunday, August 16 in the Champions Trophy, which will be played at Bollaert-Delelis following the draw conducted last week by the LFP.

Great architect of the successful season for the Blood and Gold, Sage decided to leave Lens just one year after his arrival to try his luck in the Premier League.

As anticipated in recent days, the 47-year-old French coach will succeed Oliver Glasner on the Crystal Palace bench, where a three-year contract awaits him, with a salary multiplied by three or four, depending on sources.

Since he still had two years left on his contract, the London club had to reach an agreement with Lens to pay a transfer fee. According to RMC Sport, it will be $3.3 million, plus $2.2 million in bonuses.

After already losing its captain, Adrien Thomasson, who left for Rennes at the end of his contract, Lens has now lost another strong figure for the 2025-26 season.

To replace Sage, several names are already circulating, including Olivier Pantaloni, who was let go by Lorient despite a good season that finished 10th in Ligue 1.

According to L'Equipe, another trail leads to Patrick Videira, who just got Le Mans promoted back to Ligue 1 and has only one year left on his contract. For his part, Luis Enrique will begin his fourth season at PSG and is expected to extend his contract soon until 2030, with his current deal expiring in 2027.

Sadly, this is something very common for French clubs, with the exception of Paris Saint-Germain. For any player or manager, joining PSG is a step forward in their career. However, moving to another Ligue 1 club is often seen not as a step backward but as a stepping stone.

Any young player who joins Ligue 1 usually does so with the ambition of either signing for Paris Saint-Germain one day or earning a move to a more competitive league. The same applies to managers. Any successful project capable of challenging PSG in a given season tends to be dismantled before the next campaign even begins.

It may be too early to say for certain, but there’s a strong chance that the Lens we see in next season’s Champions League will be a weakened side, one that looks nothing like the team we watched last season. Time will tell.
