Lens' victory in the Coupe de France final has a simple consequence: they will be PSG's opponent in the Trophée des Champions (French Super Cup), and there will be, at least, three matchups between PSG and the runners-up next season, including the first match of the campaign.
A heavy favorite for the match, RC Lens did not tremble against OGC Nice on Friday night (3-1) in the 2026 Coupe de France final, lifting the oldest trophy in French soccer for the first time in its history.
Already vice-champion of France, Racing Club de Lens thus completes an admirable season, with PSG manager Luis Enrique even having made them his toughest opponent in the title race over his three years in France, and the northern club gives itself a gift in the process.
As the winner of the Coupe de France, Lens has earned the right to face the French champions, PSG, in the 2026 Trophée des Champions next August. This will take place on Saturday, August 15 or Sunday, August 16, probably in France, according to the latest news. It will be the first official match of the 2026-27 season for elite clubs, with Ligue 1 resuming the following week.
A consequence of the calendar is that PSG and Lens, the two best French clubs of the season that has just ended, will face each other at least three times next season, with the two Ligue 1 matches plus this Super Cup.
But there could be up to six matchups during the season if the two clubs also meet in the Coupe de France and the Champions League, with Lens set to play in the UCL next year.
This season, PSG faced Monaco at least four times: twice in Ligue 1, with losses of 1-0 and 3-1, and twice in the Champions League during the playoffs, with a 3-2 win in Monaco and a 2-2 draw at the Parc des Princes. The previous season, Paris Saint-Germain also played four times against Stade Brestois: twice in Ligue 1 and twice in the Champions League, for four wins (3-1 and 5-2 in L1, 3-0 and 7-0 in the UCL).
We will see how Lens arrives at the start of next season, because it is common for the French teams that best compete with PSG during a campaign to arrive at the next one incomplete, that is, dismantled as victims of the summer transfer window.
That said, Lens is seen as a stable project. We will have to wait to see if they project that status in their transfer strategy. Hopefully that will be the case, so that we have a competitive Super Cup.
