INDIANAPOLIS — Defense has been a calling card for the Borden girls basketball team these past four seasons.
Saturday afternoon, it secured them another Class A state championship.
The Braves dominated Fremont, limiting them to 30% shooting and matching the Class A state final record for fewest points allowed, in a dominating 51-31 victory.
The two-time defending champions led by seven at halftime despite two of its top players, AJ Mallad and Ava Wheeler, both encountering early foul trouble.
Mallad returned for the start of the second half and quickly set to tightening the screws on Fremont, drilling a 3-pointer on Borden’s first possession, then converting an Emma Hart steal into another triple.
The now two-time defending champs maintained their double-digit margin the rest of the way, pushing it to 20 at the end of the third quarter and 22 late in the fourth on an Emma Hart layup off a turnover.
Hart, a senior, finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds, while Rarick logged 10 points and a state record-tying eight assists. Hart was named the Mental Attitude Award winner for Class A.
Borden shot 45% and committed 14 turnovers — it had only two between the second and third quarters — against a Fremont defense whose ability to turn teams over fueled February run.
The Braves were significantly longer than the Eagles, and they took full advantage of that discrepancy, winning the rebound battle, 30-20, and holding Grace Scharlach and Mya Turner — their opponent’s top-two scorers — to a combined 18 points on 7-of-25 shooting (0-for-7 from 3).
Mallad finished with 13 points for Borden, while Wheeler clocked seven points, two blocks and four rebounds.
Saylor Schleicher was critical off the bench when Mallad ran into foul trouble, logging four points, three rebounds, a block and a steal while also locking down Scharlach. Paityn Fisk checked in for Wheeler late in the second quarter, and promptly delivered a layup to push Borden’s lead back to five.
IndyStar will have a behind-the-scenes story with Borden on Sunday.
