The Detroit Lions are down another safety.
The Lions ruled safety Avonte Maddox out Wednesday, Dec. 24, for their must-win game against the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday (4:30 p.m., Netflix) because of a knee injury.
The Lions have played most of the year without Kerby Joseph, the NFL's interception leader in 2024, because of a knee injury and have been without Brian Branch the past two weeks because of a torn Achilles tendon.
DISTANT REPLAY: How a loss to Vikings altered the course of the Detroit Lions' season
Maddox started the previous two games in Branch's absence and has 18 tackles, three pass breakups and a forced fumble since taking an every-down role on defense in the Lions' Dec. 4 win over the Dallas Cowboys, when Joseph's replacement, Thomas Harper, suffered a brain injury.
Harper returned to the starting lineup for last week's win over the Pittsburgh Steelers and is expected to start against the Vikings. Branch and Joseph are on season-ending injured reserve. The Lions have two other safeties on their 53-man roster, Jalen Mills and Daniel Thomas, and two more – Loren Strickland and Damontae Kazee – on practice squad.
At 8-7, the Lions need to win their final two games and have the Green Bay Packers lose their final two games to make the playoffs.
The Packers (9-5-1) play the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday.
The Vikings are expected to start undrafted rookie Max Brosmer at quarterback.
Along with Maddox, the Lions ruled offensive lineman Gio Manu out for Thursday's game – Manu is on injured reserve – listed 11 players as questionable and elevated center Kingsley Eguakun and tight end Giovanni Ricci from the practice squad to the gameday roster.
Eguakun started in place of an injured Graham Glasgow (knee) last week, and Lions coach Dan Campbell said he was weighing which player to start against the Vikings. Glasgow does not have a game designation on the injury report.
Amon-Ra St. Brown, who said he expects to play through knee soreness, and fellow starters Amik Robertson (hand), Marcus Davenport (shoulder), Tayler Decker (shoulder), Christian Mahogany (fibula) and Alim McNeill (abdomen) also are questionable.
Running back David Montgomery, who did not practice Tuesday because of an illness, was listed as a limited participant Wednesday, and Khalil Dorsey was added to the injury report with an illness and is questionable.
