PHILADELPHIA — Allegany graduate Avery Miller is third in heptathlon after Day 1 of New Balance Nationals Thursday at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

Miller, who is signed to Penn State, is 206 points back of leader Yuliya Maslouskaya of IMG Academy with 3,075 points.

Franklin Field is at site of Maslouskaya’s future college home, as she’s signed to the University of Pennsylvania.

Miller bested the U18 Belarus national champion in the event at last year’s meet to capture a national championship, her first of two after winning the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Junior Olympics in Greensboro, North Carolina, later that summer.

Miller placed second in the pentathlon at the Nike Indoor Nationals in March, earning All-American status.

The future Nittany Lion set season bests in all four disciplines Thursday.

She topped the field in the 200-meter dash (24.79) and shot put (37’ 9”) and had the fifth-best high jump (5’ 3”). Her 100-meter hurdles time of 15.29 was 12th-fastest.

Miller’s high jump would have won the Maryland Class 1A state championship by five inches in the spring, and her shot put would have won it by a foot.

Miller is 260 points ahead of where she was through four events last season, but Maslouskaya is headed toward a significant personal best.

Maslouskaya leads the pack with 3,281 points, followed by Khari Webb of Collierville, Tennessee (3,198).

The athletes will compete in long jump, javelin throw and the 800-meter run on Friday.

In the spring, Miller set a new Maryland individual state championship record, finishing her illustrious high school career with 14 titles.

The previous record of 12 was set by Hammond’s Kisha Jett and Walter Johnson’s Sally Glynn, who went on to become collegiate All-Americans at Florida and Stanford, respectively.

Miller’s state titles came in eight different events: 100m, 200m, 300m hurdles, 400m, 800m, long jump, triple jump and discus.

She finished her career holding 12 of the 18 Allegany girls track and field records.
