If the No. 6-seeded Washington Huskies are going to pull off their first victory in the NCAA Tournament since 2017 on Friday when they face off with the No. 11-seeded South Dakota State Jackrabbits, coach Tina Langley's team is going to have to lean heavily on sophomore Avery Howell.

Before arriving on Montlake through the transfer portal, where she averaged 13.7 points per game (good for second on the team behind All-Big Ten First Team honoree Sayvia Sellers) and a team-high 8.3 rebounds per game during her first year with the Huskies on her way to an All-Big Ten honorable mention, Howell stood out as a freshman with the USC Trojans, where she picked up some valuable experience in the NCAA Tournament.

After USC superstar Juju Watkins suffered a torn ACL in a second-round win over Mississippi State, Howell became the go-to scorer as the Trojans made a push to the Elite Eight before falling to the eventual national champions, the UConn Huskies.

Over the four games in the tournament, Howell averaged 12.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2.3 steals per game, and against the Jackrabbits, the Huskies will be looking for her to remain a rock-solid option under pressure.

She posted 18 points in each of Washington's two matchups in the NCAA Tournament, and due to the presence of SDSU forward Brooklyn Meyer, an All-Summit League Defensive Team honoree, the Huskies may have trouble in the paint and will have to rely on their three-point shooting. Enter Howell, who has been Washington's most reliable shooter this season.

Howell has connected on 41.9 percent of her long-range attempts this year, and combined with Sellers, who has hit 35.9 percent of her three-pointers on the season, the Huskies have a dangerous combination of shooters that could help power them to a win.

The Huskies and Jackrabbits are set to tip off at approximately 11:30 a.m. PT on Friday, March 20.
