The Augusta Lynx are back. While they might be a new franchise under new ownership, a beloved team name has reemerged as hockey returns to Augusta, Ga.

The ECHL announced last August that the league would be returning to a market it had not inhabited since 2008 under the ownership of former Heisman Trophy Winner Tim Tebow and business partner David Hodges.

The previous Augusta Lynx operated in the ECHL from 1998 to 2008. The new Lynx will begin operations in October 2027, so we’ll still have to wait a little while before we see the new edition, but the excitement is certainly growing.

Based in the same town as the iconic site of The Masters, Augusta National, the team’s name is a nod to the market’s golf roots and the bobcat native to Georgia.

Additionally, the new team revealed its color scheme, which certainly showcases that the team’s name won’t be the only callback to the course that made the town famous.

This will be Tebow and Hodges' second foray into ECHL ownership as the duo also owns the Tahoe Knight Monsters in Stateline, Nevada.

The Lynx will be the ECHL’s 31st team in 2027-28. The league will welcome the brand new New Mexico Goatheads in the fall and will also welcome the Trenton Ironhawks, which will begin play next season after the Utah Grizzlies relocated to New Jersey.
