SHERRODSVILLE – It has been billed as "the oldest and finest inland lake regatta in Ohio."

Atwood Harvest Moon Regatta, sponsored by Atwood Yacht Club, is 75 years old. Sailing skippers entered this year will take to the water starting Sept. 6 at Atwood Lake in Carroll and Tuscarawas counties and conclude Sept. 7 with an afternoon awards ceremony.

"This signature sailing event draws competitors and families from across the region and beyond for a weekend of racing, camaraderie, and celebration on the beautiful inland waters of Atwood Lake," explained information from Atwood Yacht Club.

Winners will be congratulated not only for their victories in a milestone regatta, but also for overcoming racing challenges on Atwood.

"Sailing on Atwood Lake is a true test of skill, known for its frequent wind shifts and unpredictable breezes that challenge even the most experienced sailors," regatta officials said. "It's the kind of sailing that sharpens a skipper's instincts and rewards smart tactics and close teamwork."

The regatta isn't just for competition.

"Many crews are family-based, making it a fun and inclusive atmosphere for sailors of all ages. But, the Atwood Harvest Moon Regatta is more than just racing, it's a full weekend experience. Sailors, crew and their families can enjoy swimming in the Club's brand new pool, delicious meals, and live entertainment throughout the weekend."

Harvest Moon has history

That experience begins the moment sailors arrive.

Skippers will gather Sept. 5 for a mast-raising and setup in the afternoon, registration and check-in in the evening, and a casual dinner during "meet-and-greet" festivities extending into the night.

"To mark the 75th anniversary, Atwood Yacht Club's microbrewery will debut a limited-edition commemorative ale, a revival of AYC's beloved 'Main Sail Ale,'" said the club information, noting the brew is "a favorite among club members, and sailors who have been coming to Atwood for this regatta over the years."

The Harvest Moon Regatta traces roots to 1950.

"The Atwood Yacht Club held its first official regatta following its 1948 incorporation," a club history notes. "The Atwood Yacht Club itself was born out of a vision by Judge Frank F. Cope, who launched Atwood Lake's first sailboat in 1939."

Racing organizers said this year's Harvest Moon Regatta will feature racing for Thistle, Highlander, MC Scow one-design classes, as well as jib-and-main (JAM) fleets. Awards will be presented Sunday to top finishers in each fleet, along with special awards for top women sailors and MC Scow sailors in master (50-59), grand Master (60-69), and youth divisions.

As a former regatta chairman, Joseph Cline, once said, "This multiclass event has a well-deserved reputation as being the 'Best in Class' of weekend regattas."

Becomes 'Clean Regatta'

If you want to get a closer look at the racing, organizers said there are ways to watch from the water or on shore.

"Spectators will find excellent photo opportunities, with colorful spinnakers, close finishes, and the scenic backdrop of Atwood Lake creating a striking setting for both amateur and professional photographers."

Sailing always has been considered an environmentally friendly recreation. This year's regatta has taken a step to solidify that standing.

"This year's regatta will also be recognized as a Clean Regatta through the Atwood Yacht Club's partnership with Sailors for the Sea," organizers said. "In a commitment to sustainability, AYC is reducing single-use plastics by providing refillable water stations, reusable beer cups, and plastic-free dinnerware throughout the event."

Clean air and the water are beneficial to a sailing regatta, and even as entrants celebrate the past of the Harvest Moon Regatta it makes sense to protect its resources in the future.

"For 75 years, the Atwood Harvest Moon Regatta has embodied the spirit of inland sailing, community, and tradition," said organizers. "This year promises to be the most memorable yet."
