Roberto De Zerbi is at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Atletico Madrid have taken a decisive step towards signing Tottenham Hotspur central defender Cristian Romero after reaching an agreement in principle on personal terms, according to Matteo Moretto.
The 28-year-old Argentina international is ready to join Los Colchoneros, who are now in contact with Spurs to agree a transfer fee.
Romero’s future in North London has been the subject of intense speculation throughout the summer transfer window. Despite remaining a key figure in Tottenham’s defence, the World Cup winner has expressed a desire to seek a new challenge abroad, prompting interest from several European heavyweights.
Inter Milan had previously established contact with Spurs and were willing to do a deal for around €40m, but the Serie A champions needed to clear squad space to greenlight a move, opening the door for Atletico Madrid to make their move.
Arsenal have also been credited with an interest following an injury to William Saliba, but direct business between the arch-rivals remains virtually impossible. That dynamic played directly into Atletico’s hands, allowing the Spanish club to move into pole position.
The opportunity to play under fellow countryman Diego Simeone has been a compelling factor for Romero. Known for his aggressive, physical, and tactical defending, Romero fits the exact defensive DNA Simeone demands. With Atletico reshaping their squad after recent defensive departures, adding an established World Cup winner gives them an elite anchor at the back.
Direct talks between Tottenham and Atletico Madrid are now ongoing. Spurs are holding out for a fee of around €40m to sanction Romero’s departure. With personal terms agreed and negotiations progressing smoothly between the clubs, Romero’s arrival at the Estadio Metropolitano is expected in the coming days.
