The Athletics may be without one of baseball's top sluggers for the remainder of the season.
On Tuesday, A's manager Mark Kotsay provided an injury update on first baseman Nick Kurtz, who received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right thumb last week.
“Four weeks of no mobility. You probably can do the timeline and think through the scenarios in front of us for Nick,” Kotsay told reporters, including MLB.com's Martin Gallegos.
Kurtz's injury could force him to miss the rest of the year for the A's. The pain in his thumb has been consistent since the middle of July.
Last year's AL Rookie of the Year went on the IL with a thumb capsule sprain on July 10 and missed just over two weeks.
Meanwhile, the A's are 6-24 in their last 30 games and have fallen to the basement of the American League standings.

Given their record, it may be best for Kurtz not to suit up again this season. The A's no longer have a strong chance to clinch a Wild Card berth, and they don't want to jeopardize Kurtz's availability for spring training or Opening Day in 2027.
It doesn't make sense to risk further injury.
In 99 games this season, Kurtz hit .256/.396/.483 with 21 home runs and a 141 OPS+.
He became the youngest player to hit four homers in a 6-for-6 performance last July against the Houston Astros.
