Some have made the point with moving Bryant to DE. How about moving one of our young WRs like Gilmore when he is healthy to CB. We have zero speed in the secondary except for Wilson. Jackson can be a ball hawk but is not fast. Barrett and Hill are smart quick guys but have no speed, it doesn't matter how smart a guy is if he doesn't even have a shot of being in the required space. At least Gilmore could be in a position to make a play in man-to-man coverage... the zone coverage of Hill and Barrett is a slow death and in 4 quarters will produce three TDs a game... one seven yrd comp. there and a six yard comp. ect... Combine a lack of CB speed (and height) in the equation with no pass rush and there is no way this team can control a high powered offense. T. Owens is going to go off on us big time, even Joey Galloway must be licking his chops about now. I would have to say Thompson has as much speed as our CBs... blame the coaches only if you feel that they are responsible for this lack of getting the proper talent but there is no formula under the sun Marmie could come up with which would have defeated the Ram offense.

I'd rather have a slow guy in position than a fast guy out of position in the defensive backfield.

my point is

But a slow CB will constantly be out of position down field when the Qb has more than three seconds to pass or that slow CB is out of position in the first place because they are giving the WR a five yard cushion because point blank they can't keep up down field with them. I don't know, the Gilmore thing is by and large a mistake but like a lot of you fellow fans I think desperate measures have to be taken with the available talent at CB.

But fast guys can recover, while slow guys will continue to get burned...

Catch-22!

Maybe instead of switching guys positions, the Cards should just blitz the hell out of everyone from alot of different places and not allow the slow CBs to be exposed. Maybe not giving QBs 5-6 seconds to set up in the pocket, get a drink of water and complete a pass is the tonic needed for this defense.

As for switching Gilmore, won't happen even in the offseason. Draft is how this team will improve the secondary. Not FA, not from within...the draft.

Stone

Stone though seems stoned. I doubt he knows much about where he can find his teammates on the sideline, or what sideline is his. I had so much faith in this guy but I have given up hope on him.

I agree.....the best way to deal with the corner situation is to bring it early & often........That way to QB's for the other team are worried and hurrying throws........you'll get alot more tip balls and picks in my opinion....you'll give up an occasional big play but we already are giving those up.......Bring & make the Qb's nervous.........

I brought up Stone's name to prove a point, it takes more than speed to get it done....I thought the guy had a shot to be a good one... seems very unlikely at this point

Yeah, he's fast. But Stone's on IR. Not an option.

Hey, how about Kevin Kasper? Kasper's back from injury this week, he's one of the faster players on the team, and played DB in high school. If we're playing pick-a-position, he makes as much sense as anyone else... ;)

I would bring pressure from the start.... I don't care if he can run........I would rather pressure the guy into mistakes then sit back and expect our corners to cover their 3 WR's all day.......bring it, bring it, bring it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Instead of moving players around I think it's time we tried a different scheme. The 4-3 has not worked in years. We have so much speed and talent invested in our linebackers. It's time that the Cards switched to a 3-4. Rotate Johnson, Pace, Wakefield, and King on the ends. Leaving Bryant, Bell, and Tanner filling the middle.

Fisher and Thompson have been our best and most consistant defensive players. Darling has the speed. McKinnon is the heart and soul of the defense and has played as such. It's time we use them all at once.

And just when you think you have brought it enough, you reach down further and bring it again. Go down swinging, not pinned in the corner getting beaten senseless.

Definitely.... I thought we were supposed to be more disruptive on defense..... I have yet to see us bring it to anyone in the regular season....the best stops we had against St Louis happened when we brought pressure to Bulger and made him throw it early.......you can't give Qb's time and let good WR's run free forever..........And please D lineman.... if you can't get to the QB, please get your hands up!!!!! Make it hard on their QB

When your players aren't executing, the last thing you want to do is to move them around.

Heck! They haven't learned the position they're already playing let alone having to learn a new one.

Moving Bryant to LDE won't solve three of our biggest defensive problems:

- Plugging the gap and holding fast against the power sweep to the left (away from where Wendell would be playing)

- Putting pressure on the passer's blind side (away from Bryant)

- Pass coverage by our corners.

I'd rather see us become tougher at both DT spots. (If this were to happen, I think we'd find better outside play from DJ, Wakefield and Pace). To do this consistently throughout the game requires 4 DT's in rotation (Bryant, Bell, Tanner and (ughhh!) Davis). Moving Wendell outside would mean we'd have to keep Ransom in rotation, and I'm not sure that would get it done.
