A difficult listen. It sounds like Bobby Hurley has almost given up on turning the ASU basketball program around.

He reached the end of the road, realistically, years ago. He should've moved on. It's very tough to see this basketball program mattering anytime soon.. ASU is actually getting a fair return on what they have put into basketball. Which is next to nothing.

It is really embarrassing. The Big12 makes it even more difficult for him to win. He attracted really good talent over the years BUT never got a team past the second round.

It's a mix of issues with Hurley and ASU basketball. Hurley is a good recruiter but frankly, not a very good coach. I don't know specifically what the issue is, but most likely has something to do with his personality which seems volatile and mercurial.

He seems to lose his team every year after initially good starts. And then it seems that he has to start over with an entirely new roster after the previous one completely turns over... and this has often been the case even prior to all the NIL changes. That should be a big tipoff as to where the problem lies.

The other (non-Hurley) issue is the program itself which has never gotten great community support, even during the best of times. ASU's hoops program is about equivalent to UA's football program in that respect - even when they've had the odd good year, the local support is half-hearted at best.

Add in a university administration and president that barely cares about its forefront major college sports program, let alone the ones perceived as second class, and you can see why trying to elevate the hoops program is going to be an uphill battle for any coach.

Storming the court... a long time coming... but sweet nevertheless.

I think they would pretty much have to win out to have a shot at making the tournament. That's excluding the B12 tourney, although a big run there would also help their cause. The NIT might be more realistic.

I'd be happy with a winning record and an NIT appearance.

Massamba Diop will likely be a top 10 pick in the NBA draft.

Unfortunate injury for Texas Tech.

Report: JT Toppin suffered a torn ACL and is out for the season.

What are your guys’ thoughts about Chris Beard possibly becoming ASU’s basketball coach?

Is that even a thing?

I wouldn't be thrilled. He had that domestic situation and Ole Miss is really bleh this year. I have no idea why he would even be in the discussion at this point.

I think ASU would be thrilled to get Randy Bennett but I don't know how likely that is.

I heard that Beard may be done at Ole Miss, and ASU mentioned as a possible landing spot. Obviously far from a done deal and might not even happen, but it got my attention. Beard was a top-10 coach in the sport for a minute, but after the DV incident and losing his job at Texas, has been pretty meh.

You have to wonder why Bennett hasnt gotten a better job than SMC in his career. I’ve heard the ASU connection w/ Bennett at least a half dozen times seeing as he’s from Mesa

Probably he stays at St Mary's along the same lines that Mark Few stays at Gonzaga. Small school where you are competitive and in the tournament every year. They get paid pretty well.

Yes, Bennett has been rumored for a long time but Hurley has been here a long time. Maybe ASU is one of the few jobs he would leave St Mary's for.

Not sure that a coach who would be 64 years old next season is what ASU needs or wants. Eric Olen (New Mexico) seems like a potentially good choice to me, although I have no idea if this is realistic.

Well, there is that with his age. I guess we will have to see who is actually interested. I mean it is tough for ASU to sell the job. The facilities are an embarrassment and really hamper recruiting.

These days, I think these kids would play in a dumpster if it meant they get paid enough. The facilities arms race is largely over and the focus is on paying these kids. Having said that, basketball facilities are atrocious
