A difficult listen. It sounds like Bobby Hurley has almost given up on turning the ASU basketball program around.

He reached the end of the road, realistically, years ago. He should've moved on. It's very tough to see this basketball program mattering anytime soon.. ASU is actually getting a fair return on what they have put into basketball. Which is next to nothing.

It is really embarrassing. The Big12 makes it even more difficult for him to win. He attracted really good talent over the years BUT never got a team past the second round.

It's a mix of issues with Hurley and ASU basketball. Hurley is a good recruiter but frankly, not a very good coach. I don't know specifically what the issue is, but most likely has something to do with his personality which seems volatile and mercurial.

He seems to lose his team every year after initially good starts. And then it seems that he has to start over with an entirely new roster after the previous one completely turns over... and this has often been the case even prior to all the NIL changes. That should be a big tipoff as to where the problem lies.

The other (non-Hurley) issue is the program itself which has never gotten great community support, even during the best of times. ASU's hoops program is about equivalent to UA's football program in that respect - even when they've had the odd good year, the local support is half-hearted at best.

Add in a university administration and president that barely cares about its forefront major college sports program, let alone the ones perceived as second class, and you can see why trying to elevate the hoops program is going to be an uphill battle for any coach.
