Others post up and down scores across the board
Tuesday was a banner day for Astoria basketball as both teams flew past Molalla. In other games, the Seaside and Knappa girls teams were victorious, the placing of the Knappa boys team became more clear and Warrenton fell to Neah-Kah-Nie.
Astoria girls blow lead, then prevail
The last 17 seconds of regulation play and beyond was a story of an inexperienced team figuring out how to win basketball games.
Though the Fishermen saw a four point lead disappear, they responded in overtime and ended up surviving 49-48 after a Kate Barendse free throw. It wasn’t how the coaching staff would draw it up, but a win is a win and the girls were happy to celebrate only their fifth of the year.
With the Astoria girls out of playoff contention, head coach Jordan Ax said the goal down the stretch is for the team to gain experience. That can be in the form of playing against different defenses and it also means figuring out how to win close games.
Tuesday was an example of the latter.
Taking on a Molalla team that is trending towards the playoffs, Astoria battled all day long to stay in the game. The Fishermen started off well as they led 11-8 after the first quarter. They would soon get hit by a shooting barrage by Molalla senior guard Yasmin Montiel. The senior made five three pointers in the first half and led her team to a 24-18 halftime lead. But the Fishermen bounced back in the third quarter and closed the gap to just three points after the third quarter, 37-34. Behind a strong fourth quarter the Fishermen would end up taking a 43-39 lead and looked to be on their way to victory. But were they?
The Fishermen’s inexperience popped up at the worst time as instead of running the clock out they decided to take what looked to be a wide open layup. But it ended up not working as the shot rolled around and out. The missed layup was followed by a foul and the Fishermen were not able to secure a defensive rebound which led to Montiel making her only three-pointer of the second half to send the game to overtime.
Tuesday was a balanced scoring day for the Fishermen behind sophomore guard Kyah Gohr. Gohr led the way with 20, to match Montiel. Behind her three other girls scored at least six points. Barendse had eight points, then sophomores Kysa Whitsett and Sofia Nygaard had six points.
Astoria will return to Cowapa league play in a Friday game at Tillamook.
Older Gohr leads Astoria boys
Down the road it was a banner night for senior Quin Gohr, as he scored 25 points to lead Astoria past a top-three team in boys 4A basketball.
This is a victory that almost certainly locks the Fishermen boys into the playoffs.
The boys responded after running into a St. Helens barrage to win 70-64 on the road. With Molalla being ranked No. 2 and having just three losses coming in, this was a great win for the Fishermen’s RPI. With the boys more than likely not winning the Cowapa League, they need to stack up the RPI and strength of schedule the best they can. This victory moved them up to No. 10 in the 4A standings.
Barring a late season collapse against Seaside or Tillamook, the boys should comfortably qualify for the playoffs.
Seaside girls back in control
A 49-39 victory over Scappoose and a St. Helens loss to Tillamook put the Seaside girls basketball team back in charge of the Cowapa league.
All that’s left for Seaside is to either win out, or have St. Helens suffer another loss. The Lions winning out would see them win the league as they would break the tiebreaker over Seaside due to beating them twice.
The Seagulls took the court Friday night for a top-five showdown with Marist Catholic. The Spartans entered Friday ranked No. 4 in 4A and winners of four straight games. Seaside came into the game ranked No. 1 in 4A, so this game could serve as a potential state playoff preview.
Knappa boys fall to Portland Christian
The Portland Christian boys flexed their muscles Tuesday night against Knappa.
After the Loggers gave them a fight in the first game, the Royals left no doubts in this one as they won 72-39. This moved them to 22-0 on the regular season and kept them No. 2 in 2A behind Trinity Lutheran. Knappa meanwhile, fell to 19-5 and 11-2 in league play. With second place wrapped up for the Loggers they are now turning their attention towards the state playoffs. A game against Clatskanie wrapped up their regular season.
Currently the boys are ranked No.6 and on pace to host a home playoff game.
The girls took care of business Tuesday.
The Knappa girls basketball team grinded out a 52-43 road win against the Royals to start off the night. The Royals came in as the fourth best team behind Nestucca, Knappa and Clatskanie so the Loggers had to work a little harder than normal.
The victory allowed Knappa to keep pace with Nestucca in the league race. A victory Friday night over Clatskanie would see the Loggers and Bobcats tie at the top. With the Loggers ranked No. 8, a home game is not a guarantee, so a victory over Clatskanie and an outright league title over Nestucca in their upcoming rematch would solidify things.
Warrenton splits the week
It was a good night for Neah-Kah-Nie Tuesday against Warrenton.
The Pirates took care of both genders with the girls winning 46-24 and the boys winning 66-35.
Warrenton would go on to rebound on Thursday as they swept Riverdale on their senior night.
With the Warriors honoring their seniors, all of them had good nights. On the girls side, Lucy Smith and Natalie Pike combined to score 37 of the Warriors 45 points in their 45-26 victory. Alyssa Oseguera and Frances Taggart provided the Warriors with active defense, rebounding and timely scoring. The victory was the first one by the girls in league against a team not named Corbett.
The boys kind of played around in the first half.
With Riverdale being one of the worst teams in the entire state and winless on the season, Warrenton used Thursday to play different rotations. This meant getting lots of their junior varsity and underclassmen more playing time than usual.
After giving up 12 points in the first quarter, the Warriors allowed just 18 over the last three as they cruised to a 58-30 victory.
Senior Zephan Pierce had one of his best scoring games of the year, with 15 points. Warriors leading scorer Ryan Palmer started slow in the first half but finished with 15, while RJ Thornton knocked down four three pointers to finish with 12.
With the game out of hand, the Warriors made sure to get other senior Alexander Davis in the score book. Davis knocked down a three pointer with the clock running out in the game.
