All eyes were glued to the Aston Martin garage on Friday morning as the paddock settled in for Free Practice 1 at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix. The team had just declared a staggering 16-part upgrade package—essentially debuting Adrian Newey’s highly anticipated B-spec AMR26. But the excitement quickly came to a screeching halt thanks to a bizarre mechanical failure on Lance Stroll’s side of the garage.
Just 11 laps into his session, Stroll’s upgraded car suffered a sudden left-rear suspension failure. The collapse snapped the rear of the car on the exit of Turn 2, sending the Canadian driver spinning across the track as he approached Turn 3 and immediately triggering a red flag.
The sudden suspension collapse sent shockwaves through the Aston Martin data center, primarily because it didn’t align with the massive list of new parts bolted to the chassis.
According to a breaking news update shared via X, Adrian Newey directly addressed the failure with BBC Sport’s Andrew Benson. The legendary designer admitted that the engineering team was entirely caught off guard.
“The affected area is NOT the one that underwent changes, so in that sense it was something very unexpected,” Newey revealed. “We’re all trying to understand what went wrong.”
While Aston Martin did introduce minor changes to the rear suspension leg positions and external fairings for the Hungaroring, Newey’s comments suggest the catastrophic failure occurred on a legacy component that the team believed was entirely structurally sound.
While Stroll’s session was a disaster, the other side of the garage managed to salvage some highly valuable data.
Fernando Alonso enjoyed a generally productive FP1, logging the 13th fastest time of the session—a cautiously promising baseline for the B-spec car, considering he was actively managing the situation. Immediately following Stroll’s red flag, the Aston Martin pit wall took zero chances, explicitly instructing Alonso to stay completely off the heavy Hungaroring kerbs for the remainder of his soft-tire runs.

Despite reporting some mild vibrations throughout the session, Alonso kept the car out of the wall and delivered crucial feedback on the new floor and aerodynamic packages.

They must isolate exactly why Stroll’s suspension snapped on an unchanged section of the car and implement emergency countermeasures before FP2.
