Q: Ira no surprise with Jahmir Young being let go and I saw you said the same might be true with Keshad Johnson. I agree about getting in as many vets as possible. – Nate.

A: Which is what the Heat typically have done when it is go-time. It doesn’t mean you have to work along the lines of a Zydrunas Ilgauskas or Mike Bibby, like the Heat did during the Big Three era. But the more options you have, especially when dealing with minimum-scale free agents, the better chance at overall roster success. So if Gabe Vincent over Jahmir Young or Buddy Hield over Keshad Johnson, so be it. Plus if you choose to appease Giannis Antetokounmpo with Khris Middleton or one of Giannis’ brothers, then you will need to find something elsewhere on the roster. As it is, the Heat still could then bring back Jahmir and Keshad on two-way contracts.

Q: Why, exactly, are the Heat hard capped? It seems like every time the Heat do a big deal, the league throws in some arcane rule to punish them. – Andrew, Coral Gables.

A: Nothing arcane here. If you send out more in a trade than you take back, hard-capped. If you use an expiring trade exception from a previous salary-cap year (as Heat will do with the Duncan Robinson exception to add Bobby Portis), then hard-capped. The rules have been in place for years, not some twist the league added this offseason to limit the Heat.

Q: Did the extra concessions the Heat had to give up for Giannis Antetokounmpo turn the trade from no-brainer into something we won’t even know if it was worth it until two to three years from now? – Morgan, New Orleans.

A: Or perhaps likely beyond that. This was a case of the Bucks trading their present for the future. So full measure can’t be taken after the Bucks utilize the 2033 first-rounder from the Heat. Who knows, the Heat could win two titles with Giannis Antetokounmpo and then the Bucks could thrive for years with the prospects and picks landed from the Heat. This has a chance of being win-win. If the Heat have more in the trophy case, I doubt they would begrudge the Bucks any success in the middle of next decade.
