Q: Ira, with this latest allegation from the Department of Justice that Terry Rozier, in addition to other charges, accepted a $100,000 bribe, do the Heat have any legal recourse? After surrendering a first-round pick we should be awarded a supplemental first-round pick instead of a paltry second-round pick that they decided to give us. – Barry, Deerfield Beach.
Q: Ira, even Terry Rozier is found innocent in federal criminal court, can Heat still sue him for damage in civil court? – Ben, Plantation.
A: The Heat have no reason to sue Terry Rozier, beyond perhaps clawing back his salaries. But in the bigger picture, there apparently was a bigger picture at play, with the latest allegations and new charges added to that case. What seemed like a minimal compromise of a second-round pick from the Hornets to the Heat in this June’s draft seems like far less consolation at the moment. Terry clearly had a lot – a lot – hanging over his head during his entire Heat tenure. This appeared to be far more than caveat emptor. As it is, the Hornets do not get the Heat’s first-round pick until 2027 at the earliest. I would think that’s where the Heat’s influence should be directed and efforts should be re-doubled. Over? Did Adam Silver, himself, say it was over?
Q: No draft picks for Ja Morant. Too much for him. He’s a negative asset. – C.C.
A: Agree. But I would take it further and also make the Grizzlies take on the contract of Nikola Jovic, which, in turn, would offset a healthy amount of Ja Morant’s salary. The problem is that to make the salary math work, the Heat would have to give up something of quality (Tyler Herro?), something that could be utilized as part of a bigger deal.
Q: Same story as always: We’ll end up getting nobody and run it back, and I’ll be hopeful as always. – Ty.
A: Which also could prove to be the case, with an eye toward the 2027 offseason. But there at least has to be a degree or reshuffling, something more than draft picks. Say what you want, but the acquisition of Norman Powell at least created months of hope. Sometimes similar, at minimum, seemingly would be required.
