Q: Ira, going back to your story, plenty of teams missed out on players in free agency and trades. The Heat were the only team to get Shaquille O’Neal in a trade while he still had something left in the tank. And don’t forget the madness when they chased LeBron James. They wanted Jimmy Butler; they got him. They wanted Kyle Lowry; they got him. They wanted Terry Rozier; they got him. It doesn’t mean it always works out, just like Giannis Antetokounmpo might not work out. – Claudio.

A: Fair points. The problem is that several of the Heat’s pursuits were so public that there was a sense of failure when the chased player was not acquired. That included Pat Riley face to face with Kevin Durant and Damian Lillard’s agent saying he only wanted to go to Miami. Even the Jimmy Butler chase was highly public, with the Heat issuing a statement while Jimmy still was with Minnesota they were out of that chase; the following season, he was a member of the Heat.

Q: All four times the Heat have acquired a superstar before, or to avoid quibbling over who was or wasn’t a superstar, we’ll say they were players who had a major impact on winning games, it resulted in great team success. So isn’t it rather likely the Heat will have a lot of success if they acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo? – Morgan, New Orleans.

A: Yes. but to what level and for how long? Those are the questions when it comes to potentially emptying the cupboard. Such are reasonable concerns for a 31-year-old with a recent injury history. Remember, in the Heat’s most recent major move, they gave up Josh Richardson, Hassan Whiteside and a first-round pick for Jimmy Butler. A package for Giannis would (and should) come at a far higher cost.

Q: If Giannis Antetokounmpo is at the five and Bam Adebayo at the four, then we need a good shooter and defender at the three so we must keep Andrew Wiggins if we’re going to be competitive, and the Heat need to draw the line at Davion Mitchell. We won’t be competitive without him either. As much as Giannis has expressed that he would like to come to Miami unless he can get over his reticence to demand that, I don’t see that Milwaukee will send him here. – Mo, Miami.

A: Which is why it remains so fluid. But the Heat over the years have shown an ability to find complementary, cost-effective pieces after acquiring high-price talent. And there are ample names in free agency who stand as candidates to round out an Antetokounmpo-Adebayo roster.
