Arkansas baseball junior Kuhio Aloy will undergo surgery later this week to repair a broken hamate bone, a school spokesperson confirmed to the Southwest Times Record. There is a chance Aloy could return this season if the Hogs advance deep into the NCAA Tournament.
WholeHogSports first reported Aloy's impending surgery.
Aloy sustained the injury during the bottom of the third in the No. 7 Razorbacks (37-19) second-round win over No. 10 Tennessee (38-19) on Wednesday, May 20.
Aloy swung at a pitch from Tennessee starter Henry Blanco, but his front hand came off the bat. Coach Dave Van Horn and head trainer Corey Wood came out to check on Aloy, and after a brief discussion, Arkansas' designated hitter was removed from the game.
Dave Van Horn said he thinks the injury happened during Aloy's previous at-bat in the first inning. The designated hitter hit a line drive to the fence in right field for the second out of the inning.
"It looked awkward to me," Van Horn said. "Something was strange about it. He didn't fire on it. He just swung, and it's almost like he slowed down a little bit."
Arkansas led Tennessee 5-0 at the time of the injury thanks to three home runs from Zack Stewart and Camden Kozeal, with Stewart hitting a homer in each of his first two at-bats. The Razorbacks eventually finished off an 8-4 win.
Aloy entered the weekend hitting .294 with nine home runs and 41 RBIs. After a midseason slump, the junior from Hawaii was starting to find his form thanks to a better approach at the plate. Van Horn routinely complimented Aloy in recent weeks for his focus on going the other way in batting practice and in games.
