The Arizona Cardinals thankfully concluded their practice week on Friday in preparation for Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. Afterward, the team distributed a massive injury report that lists seven players out and six questionable.
By contrast, the 49ers have six players on their report with injuries and five have no game status designation while fully practicing Friday. Only starting cornerback Deommodore Lenoir is questionable. He was added to the report as limited Thursday with a calf injury and did not practice Friday.
One of the Cardinals players out is center/guard Hayden Conner, who is on injured reserve and returned to practice this week. One of the questionable players is linebacker BJ Ojulari, who is on reserve/PUP and began practicing last week. The fact that Ojulari is questionable after being listed as out last week, leaves open the possibility that he could be activated Saturday. If not activated, his 21-day practice window expires next week.
Twelve of the players listed with injuries are on defense, and 10 overall are starters. Including those that are known as out on Sunday, the Cardinals will have had 32 players miss a total of 153 games. If any of the questionable players don’t play, that will add to the total.
The rare bit of good news is that cornerback Max Melton, who missed the game against the Seahawks because of a concussion, practiced fully on Friday while not wearing a yellow, non-contact jersey and has no game-status designation.
However, there are two other significant questions heading toward Sunday.
Outside linebacker Josh Sweat was not on the estimated injury report Wednesday for the Cardinals walkthrough. He then did not practice Thursday as a rest day, which seemed odd four days after a game and one day after a walkthrough for a 28-year-old player.
Some mystery was added Friday when Sweat was limited with a knee injury although he had no game day status, which normally means a player is healthy enough to play.
It seems apparent that the injury likely occurred in Friday’s one-hour practice (unless it was away from the field at another time), making it possible the team is still gathering information, so the safest choice was to not have a game status. Any downgraded injury status can be updated on Saturday or even Sunday before the game when circumstances change. That’s what makes Ojulari’s situation intriguing given that outside linebacker Baron Browning has already been declared out because of a concussion. The only outside linebackers mot on the report are Zaven Collins, Jordan Burch and Xavier Thomas.
The other question is at right tackle where Jonah Williams is out and Kelvin Beachum is questionable. The sense is Beachum will gut it out with a groin issue, but he won’t be available as an extra blocker as he’s been frequently utilized since tight end Tip Reiman was lost for the season.
A possibility is tackle Josh Fryar, who has been inactive for the last five games after being active for the first four, center/guard Jon Gaines II, or tight end Pharaoh Brown as a practice-squad elevation.

In the 10th game of the season, this will be the fourth miss for Johnson.
Hernandez played his first game of the season in Week 5 and then had his first full practice on Friday of Week 6. In Week 7 and 9 (Week 8 was the bye), he did not appear on the injury report. However, he surfaced again last week, was limited all three days and listed as questionable, but started and played all but three late snaps. He has been limited in each practice this week.
