May 4—GAYVILLE, S.D. — It was a busy day for Mitchell-area softball teams on Saturday.
Several teams were in action on Saturday at the Gayville-Volin Softball Invitational, with games being played in both Gayville and Volin throughout the day. All games played at both venues were five-inning contests.
Bon Homme went undefeated on the day, defeating Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy 18-1 in four innings, Scotland/Menno 5-1 and Parkston 8-2. Against the Phoenix, Taycee Ranek drove in six runs as part of a three-hit performance and Raelee Lanphear also collected three hits and two RBIs.
Facing off against the Trappers, Cavaliers starting pitcher Kenadee Kozak collected eight strikeouts while navigating around four hits and four walks across all five innings, also scoring twice at the plate. Taryn Crites posted a three-hit game in Bon Homme's (6-3) last game against the Trojans and Reyna Alberts drove in two runs.
Outside of its loss to Bon Homme, Parkston was victorious in its other games, edging Scotland/Menno 8-7 courtesy of an Ali Moke walk-off single to drive home Makenna Termeer, as three Trojan hitters collected two RBIs for the contest. Parkston (2-7) scored eight runs in the final innings to down FMFA 12-6, with Alexis Holzbauer picking up four hits, three RBIs and three runs scored.
Avon went 2-1 for the tournament following a 4-3 win over Viborg-Hurley and a 12-0 shutout victory over Mount Vernon/Plankinton. A three-run first inning was all the Pirates needed to top the Cougars, as Ashley Tolsma drove in two runs to back a nine-strikeout performance from Macy Voigt in the pitching circle.
Voigt only allowed one hit in four innings of work against the Titans in the shutout win, also collecting two hits at the plate, while Brielle Voigt posted a three-hit outing with four RBIs. Avon's (10-3) lone loss came against hosts Gayville-Volin, a 9-0 Raiders win.
Scotland/Menno went 1-2 in its slate of three games, with its lone win coming on a walk off over FMFA 11-10 after erasing a six-run deficit in the final inning. In total, 11 Trappers batted in the fifth inning, with Kylie Guthmiller delivering the game-winning hit. Ervin Schrock collected two hits and drove in three runs.
Sandwiched in between its losses to Scotland/Menno (4-5) and Parkston, FMFA defeated Chamberlain 4-2. Claire Loofbourrow hit a home run in the game as the Phoenix (4-9) scratched across a run in four of the five innings of play. Jovie Vandenbosch had two hits for the Cubs along with an RBI.
Chamberlain (1-10) was bested by Gayville-Volin by a final of 18-3 and Viborg-Hurley 9-6 in its other two games. The Raiders took down MVP (5-4) by a final of 15-3 in the teams' game, while the Cougars were victorious over the Titans 10-5.
FLANDREAU, S.D. — Following a tournament-opening loss over hosts Flandreau at the Flandreau Softball Tournament, Hanson bounced back in a big way.
The Beavers took down Wagner 27-4 in three innings and battled past Sioux Falls Christian 4-3 to reach 10 victories on the season. All games played were five-inning contests.
Against the Red Raiders, Hanson scored 12 runs in the first inning and 10 more runs in the second inning, working 10 walks while picking up 15 hits in the game. Jacey Schoenrock posted a three-hit game with seven RBIs and Jozlynn Tegethoff, Marah Doyle and Kendra Endorf finished with two RBIs each.
Endorf provided the go-ahead blow for the Beavers over the Chargers, driving in two runs on a base hit as part of a four-run fourth inning. Tegethoff added an RBI single in the inning, proving to be the difference as Hanson's (10-4) Olivia Kayser quieted a late SF Christian rally by ending the game with a strikeout.
Following a 7-4 loss to Sioux Valley and a 3-1 defeat to SF Christian, McCook Central/Montrose finished its tournament with a 10-1 victory over Wagner, scoring at least a run in every inning, punctuated by a four-run fourth. Ashtyn Deknikker collected three hits and three RBIs in the game while MCM (7-6) had 2-RBI games from Josalyn Traupel and Mya Morrison.
In Wagner's (3-11) other game at the tournament, Kymani Gullikson picked up an RBI against Flandreau, but the Fliers dispatched the Red Raiders 23-3 in four innings.
REDFIELD, S.D. — The Howard softball offense scored runs in bunches to pick up its second and third victories in the history of the program.
The Tigers toppled Kingsbury County 28-0 in three innings to open their Redfield Tournament debut, while they later rebounded from a 9-1 loss in five innings over the hosting Pheasants to take down Milbank 21-8, the game also ending after five innings.
Against the Knights, Howard put up 20 hits as a team and had eight players drive in at least two runs in the game. Hadynn Kidd led the Tigers with four RBIs while Hanna Dold collected three hits and three RBIs, also homering in the game. Reese Krynauw struck out six across all three innings, allowing only a pair of hits.
Tana Hoyer drove in four runs as part of a four-hit game at the plate against Milbank, as Howard (3-4) scored 13 of its 21 runs in the game across the final two innings. Kally Beyer also had four hits and three RBIs and Krynauw helped her own cause, collecting three hits and scoring twice while also striking out eight Bulldogs batters pitching.
