Yasmany is a 25 year old 2nd year player with 731 career AB's. Are we expecting too much from such a young player?

Through his age 25 season (this year) here are his numbers through an average 162 game season

ave - .268
21 HR's
72 RBI's
SLG .435
.740 OPS

Not great, but not horrible considering he's only had just over a full seasons worth of AB's. Add to that a .477 SLG along with 17 HR's through 325 AB's this season and the optimist in me thinks we may have a decent player here. No one expected him to be anything but below average in the field and that's exactly what he is and no one expected him to be a high average or high OBP hitter and he's also met those expectations. What we did expect was some power and we are starting to see that. His 17 HR's through 325 AB's would put him on pace for 31 Hr's in a full season. If he ends up a below average fielder batting .275 with 30 HR's a year, he may still be a little overpaid, but not the bust we've been calling him. A 1 - 5 of Segura, Pollock, Goldy, Lamb & Tomas sounds lethal if he does continue to improve.

We've given up on young pitching too soon too many times, let's not make the same mistake in the OF.

Here are the numbers through his age 25 season for another current player who is HOF bound

ave - .264
19 HR's
81 RBI's
SLG .446
.797 OPS

Anyone want to guess who that player is?

Tomas is overpaid... But I guess that can be said about SO many guys these days. I guess I'm pissed because once again this team seems to have made an illogical/poor player decision.
Tomas appears to be improving at the plate. But I'm not sold this version of Yasmany will be the longer term version. Time will tell I guess. His issues in the field are real however. And since I don't ever see him hitting enough to somehow compensate for his horrendous defense, I am not gonna jump on the Tomas train...

So how much time do you give Jake Lamb? His Defensive WAR is almost as bad as Tomas's.

Why doesn't Lamb get the "trade him to the AL" posts?

Jon, I know you are talking defensive WAR, but Adam Eaton and Anthony Rizzo both have the same overall WAR, (4.16). I would take Rizzo 100 out of 100 times. WAR is not perfect.

Lamb also has 16 errors, to two by Tomas...

As for your comparison, would depend on your need.

lol you can't compare 3b to outfield when you're using errors to value their defense.

did you forget this tidbit?

among major-league outfielders with at least 700 plate appearances since the start of last season, Tomas ranks dead last with negative-1.9 Wins Above Replacement, per Baseball-Reference.

his current "power streak" isn't going to last. he's not a 30/100 guy.

here's one that points to you comparing his prospect status to jake lamb..

if they were expecting him to take a while to develop, they shouldn’t have paid him like a big-league regular, nor should they have given him an opt-out after the fourth year of his deal.

is he your nephew or something?

His pay is reflective of the MLB and Players Union refusal to do a world-wide draft, opening up Cuban players to be Free Agents available to the highest bidder.

Giving him an opt-out just shows how bad the Front Office is. I didn't expect him to light the world on fire right away - it is still a jump from Cuba to MLB.

He changed his swing - I could see that right away in the games I went to after the all-star break. As long as he stays focused, what you are seeing now is going to be more indicative of what you will see in the future. I don't expect him to continue at 1.400 OPS pace, but over 1.000

No, I am not related. Just tired of him getting the brunt of criticism while other players skate.

And Piecoro blaming the signing of Tomas while "the productive Mark Trumbo" was traded? Give me a break. Talk about revisionist history.

continues his hot streak. I'm hoping it's more than a hot streak. I could stomach his atrocious fielding if he continues to be a .270 hitter with 30+ HR power.

This season at 25 years old, he's a .270 hitter on pace for 33 HR's over the course of a full season with a .493 SLG. Give the kid another year to develop and we might have a nice power hitter for the #5 slot behind Goldy & Lamb.

another 2 homer game (so far) for tomas. he's found his swing since the allstar break. 8 homeruns in his last 12 games
