FOXBOROUGH, MA — French prosecutors confirmed on Friday, June 19, that Morocco and Paris Saint-Germain right back Achraf Hakimi will stand trial for rape in France after he lost an appeal to drop the case.
The charges stem from an incident that allegedly took place in February 2023, in which a woman accused Hakimi of assaulting her at his home in the suburbs of Paris. Hakimi, 27, is Morocco's captain.
Hakimi participated in Morocco's second match of the World Cup against Scotland later Friday. He also played the full match during the team's opener against Brazil, a 1-1 draw.
Before Morocco's match against Scotland, Hakimi published a statement on social media (originally written in French):
"Justice looked me in the eyes and said to me: 'If you weren't famous, there never would have been a case.'
I chose to remain silent for years. I thought that staying dignified, being patient, and trusting the justice system would allow the right decisions to be made.
Today, a story that is not mine is being told at the expense of my family, my life, and above all, the truth. Sometimes I feel like I've become an easy target.
I've been waiting for this trial since day one. And now I'm looking forward to it.
Finally, I will be able to speak."
No trial date has been set yet.
