One of the positional battles taking place this summer for the Indianapolis Colts is between Anthony Richardson and Riley Leonard for the backup quarterback role.
So as Shane Steichen, Jim Bob Cooter, and other members of the Colts' coaching staff evaluate this competition, what exactly are they looking for? How can one quarterback differentiate himself from the other?
"Certainly we track everything," Cooter said on Wednesday. "We're tracking completion percentage. We're tracking all the numbers that you can track within a practice, but each completion is a little bit different. Was it a runner's ball where we hit that, we hit that receiver out front and he can go get a bunch of yards.
"Was it a completion, but it was to the wrong guy? He missed his first read. Why didn't we throw the first read? Or did he see coverage wrong? And why is he working the left side of the field? He's working the right side of the field. Those are things where obviously coaching with all our guys in different areas positionally. But from a quarterback's perspective, you can almost talk for three or four minutes every single pass play. If you let the quarterbacks talk, what exactly did you see? Why did you do this? Why did you go there?"
Cooter continued, "And then just sort of the the mechanics of of making the throw and finishing the throw and putting it where you want it. We're evaluating all that stuff. It's not quite as clean as a sort of completion chart. We do obviously track that stuff and value that stuff, but it's a complex position. So that's when it comes to Riley and AR, that's kind of what you're looking at. It's just not pure numbers."
There is no timeline for how long this competition is going to last, but Shane Steichen said during OTAs that it will take place through training camp.
While Daniel Jones is still competing in just the 7-on-7 periods, Richardson and Leonard will continue to split reps with the ones.
Steichen said on Tuesday that there hasn't been any early separation by one of the quarterbacks in this battle.
