The Los Angeles Lakers lost Game 3 of their first-round playoff series to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday by a final score of 116-104, and in doing so, they wasted a vintage performance from LeBron James.

He scored 38 points while shooting 13-of-21 overall and 5-of-9 from 3-point range and added 10 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks. Three of his made 3-pointers came in quick succession during the fourth quarter at a time when Los Angeles fought from behind to give itself a chance to win the game before it fell completely apart in the last few minutes.

James set a record on Friday for the most points scored by a 40-year-old in the history of the NBA playoffs. Anthony Edwards, who had a strong performance himself with 29 points, eight assists and eight rebounds, couldn't help but praise James afterward.

"He was incredible," Edwards said. "He did everything he could in his power to try to will them to a win. He was shootin' it from Yucatan."

One big problem for the Lakers so far in this series has been the fact that only one of their stars has played well in any given game. While Luka Doncic was outstanding in the first two games, James was underwhelming, while Austin Reaves was inefficient.

On Friday, Doncic shot just 6-of-16 from the field while dealing with a stomach bug, and Reaves was 7-of-18 overall. Even worse, the Lakers' bench yet again only gave them meager point production.

Game 4 on Sunday afternoon will be the difference between a competitive series moving forward and one where L.A. will face elimination on its home court in Game 5.
