French Open champion Alexander Zverev claimed another straight-sets win despite a few hiccups as he reached the Wimbledon fourth round for the fourth time with the clear aim of making it beyond that for the first time.
Second seed Zverev defeated 95th-ranked American Marcos Giron 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in 2 hours 34 minutes to reach the last 16 at the majors for a 25th time.
He prevailed after being unable to keep up his level from the first set and dropping serve for the first time at 4-2 in the third.
Zverev said post-match that his maiden grand slam title last month in Paris has helped him at Wimbledon which is his least successful grand slam and where he went out in the first round last year.
"I feel different than last year. I am playing better tennis," he said on court. "To come here with a title helps anyone. Of course I want to continue."
Looking at the match, he added: "He [Giron] is somebody who plays fantastic on grass. I knew that I had to be 100% ready from the first point onwards and I am very happy to be through in straight sets."
Zverev has reached the final at the other three majors and will now aim for a first quarter-final at Wimbledon when he next faces 13th seed Jiri Lehecka, who defeated Jaume Munar 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Zverev can not meet world number one Jannik Sinner or 24-time grand slam winner Novak Djokovic until the final because they are in the other half of the draw.
But he could potentially face American Taylor Fritz, against who he has lost seven times in a row, in the quarter-finals.
