I'm sure the Diamondbacks weren't expecting that filling this job would be this difficult, although there's really nothing out there at the moment that says there's something about the job itself that is turning candidates away.
Here's a possibility. The person to whom they would report.
The Manager. Pro sports is transparent. Everyone sees it.
Our Manager has a short attention span. He contradicts
himself from day to day. He doesn't give plans time to
develop. Which would be essential from such a young
starting rotation. And he brings up young pitchers,
accustomed to a 5-day starting routine, and has them
on call in the bullpen on short notice instead.
Also, he treats his Pitching Coach as an assistant,
a go-fer. And he has our closing staff in shambles.
Constant promotions and demotions.
Two consecutive turn-downs is a problem. There
has to be a reason. Even if it hurts D-backs fans
to consider why.
As I've said over and over. Torey is a nice guy.
Too nice a guy to run the show. He tries to
please all of his veterans so no one is a backup.
The only thing that has changed that is injuries,
when he has no choice.
Despite beating patsy teams at the end of the
season, the D-backs stayed within two games of
.500 all season long. They are a mediocre team.
With no hope for gain. That is hardly an enticement
for a new Pitching Coach.
Especially the most damning part from four
paragraphs above. The Manager treats his
Pitching Coach as an assistant. Not a leader.
And the Manager has ruined our closing staff.
