For the second time in as many days, a freshman from the Michigan basketball team has opted to explore his options and look for a new landing spot.
Malick Kordel, a 7-foot-2 center from Germany, entered his name into the transfer portal after one year in Ann Arbor, a program spokesperson confirmed Thursday. He has three seasons of eligibility remaining.
Kordel arrived as a raw international prospect with a handball background and a developmental project who didn’t start playing basketball competitively until 2021.
With the talent in Michigan’s frontcourt and three players capable of playing at center — Yaxel Lendeborg, Morez Johnson Jr. and Aday Mara — Kordel was never in serious contention for playing time.
He appeared in 14 games as a reserve and primarily saw the court in garbage time with other scout team members. He recorded 17 points, 21 rebounds and five blocked shots in 58 minutes while shooting 8-for-14 from the field.
Kordel is the second Wolverine to hit the transfer portal following the team's run to the national title. Winters Grady, a freshman wing, was the first to put his name in on Wednesday. Before the news of Kordel’s departure, Michigan landed a commitment from Tennessee transfer J.P. Estrella, a 6-11 big man, earlier in the day.
