The Los Angeles Angels made their final trade of the day just before the deadline Monday, trading reliever Kirby Yates to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
In exchange, the Halos landed Double-A right-handed pitcher Kyle Robinson from the Pirates.
Yates, 39, is the least controllable of the players the Angels traded Monday, as his contract is set to expire at the end of the 2026 season. The two-time All-Star made 31 appearances for the Angels this season, pitching 27.1 innings while striking out 36 batters during that stretch.
Yates served as a high-leverage arm for the Angels, and had a decent stretch of games in June. He didn’t allow an earned run for 10 consecutive games, and recorded his 100th career save against the Athletics on June 27.
The Angels completely tore apart their bullpen heading into the deadline, dealing Chase Silseth, Brent Suter and Ryan Zeferjahn in addition to Yates in the days leading up to Monday.
Yates is a 12-year MLB veteran, making over 500 appearances with seven different teams over the course of his career. He has a lifetime ERA of 3.39, and has struck out 659 batters in 480 innings pitched.

The Athletics drafted Robinson in the 11th round of the 2023 draft, and traded him to Pittsburgh in exchange for infielder Alika Williams earlier this season.
He has pitched at three levels this season, most recently for Double-A Altoona in the Eastern League. With the Altoona Curve, Robinson had a 6.43 ERA through five starts, striking out 20 batters in 21 innings pitched. On the year, Robinson has a 4.55 ERA across all levels ranging from Class-A to Double-A, striking out 78 batters in 83 innings pitched.
Robinson may not make it onto the Angels’ Top 30 prospect rankings, but getting a return for a 39-year-old Yates on an expiring contract when the Angels are way outside of playoff contention this season is fantastic business from the Halos and interim GM John Mozeliak.
Robinson is the ninth player to come to the Angels during their fire sale, and will certainly have a chance to ascend in the ranks after the Angels blew everything up. The Halos had a solid deadline day, and set themselves up well for the future with their numerous acquisitions.
